DAVID PHINNEY – PROPRIETOR & WINE MAKER

ORIN SWIFT CELLARS

Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying.”  During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked.  In 1998, he founded Orin Swift Cellars.  With two tons of grapes and not much else, he created a Zinfandel based red blend that defied all the wine making norms of the day.  He created THE PRISONER.  Since that time, David has continued to innovate, create, and expand his vision for making unique wines from around the world.

The Prisoner, Red Blend, Napa Valley, California | 68

The Prisoner was inspired by the “mixed blacks” first made by the Italian immigrants

who originally settled in Napa Valley.  The Prisoner is now the most recognized

Napa Valley red blend, leading the resurgence of interesting blends by incorporating

Zinfandel with the unlikely mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono.

BLEND:  Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Charbono

Slander, Pinot Noir, Napa Valley, California | 90

An elegant nose presents complex aromatics of ripe cherries and dried rose petals,

a touch of white pepper and a hint of alpine forest.  Balanced and integrated, the palate

is comprised of sweet strawberries, cranberries, and traces of rhubarb.  The wine closes

at length with a finish of toasted brioche, a dash of caramel, and fresh raspberries.

100% Pinot Noir

Papillon, Red Blend, Napa Valley, California | 120

Papillon is our Napa Valley Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend—proudly consisting of all five

varietals.  Sourced from hand-picked vineyards across various Napa Valley AVAs, this vintage

of Papillon epitomizes the house style at Orin Swift—accessible, powerful, and complex.

The label is a photograph taken by our good friend and fellow winemaker Greg Gorman.

BLEND:  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc

Palermo, Napa Valley, California | 88

A bold representation of the signature grape varietals of Napa Valley, Palermo is a portrayal of

the patchwork of vineyards across the region.  With fruit sourced from the warmer Calistoga and

St. Helena AVAs, down to the cooler AVAs of Coombsville and Oak Knoll.  Grapes are also

sourced from the unique microclimates of Pope Valley, Atlas Peak, Rutherford, and Oakville.

Palermo is a true representation of Napa Valley in a bottle.

BLEND:  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

Eight Years in the Desert, California | 90

David Phinney argues that “Zinfandel may be the most difficult varietal to tame, but when you

get it right, it rewards you like no other.  If winemaking is a series of challenges, then Zinfandel

has them in spades.  So, in 2009 I took a break from Zinfandel and its challenges.  It would end

up being an eight-year break.  Eight years in the desert.  It was never if, but when, we would make

Zinfandel again.  That when is now.”

BLEND:  Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache
